Communicating About Math

This course is an elective course offered at an Intensive English Program (IEP).

Course Description: I designed and developed this 8-week course for high intermediate and advanced ESL students to communicate more effectively about math concepts, equations, word problems, problem-solving, and critical-thinking in English. I developed learning experiences to overcome international student challenges as identified by various STEM and business faculty on campus. While students could perform math tasks easily, they lacked the skills to clearly explain their work and concepts. The mix of individual and group activities implemented simulated tasks in undergraduate STEM and business classes.

Project:

  • Designed course syllabus, objectives, goals, and instructional strategies
  • Researched needs, consulted with SMEs – campus STEM and business faculty, surveyed students, reviewed undergraduate course descriptions/syllabi
  • Authored student packet with lessons, activities, projects, and answer key and created PowerPoints to accompany each lesson
  • Designed and created original and supplemental activities, games, and assessments
  • Provided teaching tips, field trip/guest speaker suggestions, and additional resources for instructors
  • Created Canvas Template course with all of the course materials for students and instructors
  • Converted and created new activities and assessments as eLearning experiences
  • Performed summative evaluations and task analyses. Implemented updates to improve the course and user-experience
  • Taught the course numerous times and coached new faculty teaching the course
